The French You Already Speak
From zero to "Wait, I can read that!" • Companion: Claude
💡 Practice Tip: Click or tap any French phrase in blue to select it, then paste into Google Translate to hear the pronunciation. Your ears need to meet these words!

I. Your Secret Weapon — Portuguese

Portuguese and French are cousins from the same Latin family. You already carry roughly 70–80% of French vocabulary in recognizable form. Look at these and just read them:

nécessairenecessárionecessary
arriverchegarto arrive
la différencea diferençathe difference
l'hôpitalo hospitalthe hospital
la libertéa liberdadefreedom

The patterns are predictable. Once you see these bridges, you unlock hundreds of words:

FR -ble -vel PT
FR -aire -ário PT
FR -té -dade PT
FR -eur -or PT

II. The Survival 20 — Your Day-One Phrases

These phrases will carry you through your first weeks in France. The French care deeply about politeness — even more than the Portuguese. Always lead with Bonjour.

III. Your First Grammar Key — The Articles

Portuguese has o / a / os / as. French has the same idea — your instincts will serve you well:

Masculine
Feminine
Plural (both)
the
leo
laa
lesos / as
a / an
unum
uneuma
desuns / umas

Just like Portuguese! Le marché (o mercado), la maison (a casa), les voisins (os vizinhos). Many words that are feminine in Portuguese are also feminine in French.

⚠️ Key difference: Before a vowel, le and la both become l'l'hôpital, l'église, l'eau. Portuguese doesn't do this, so watch for it!

📝 Devoirs — Homework

  1. Practice saying Bonjour, je voudrais... followed by pointing at things around you. Get comfortable with the mouth feel.
  2. Read a French menu online from any restaurant — you'll be shocked how much you understand with your Portuguese brain.
  3. Notice the bridges — when you see a French word, ask yourself: "What would this be in Portuguese?" The connection is almost always there.
  4. Paste the blue phrases into Google Translate and listen to each one at least twice. Then say it out loud!
