Au Restaurant — Eating in France

🍷 The golden rule: In France, the waiter won't rush you. Meals are meant to be enjoyed. They'll come when you signal. Relax, take your time, and remember — Bonjour always comes first!

I. The Restaurant Essentials

These are the phrases that carry you from the door to dessert. Memorize these and you can eat anywhere in France.

🔑 Le plat du jour: This is the daily special — usually the freshest, best-value meal in the house. The chef chose it that morning. When in doubt, order this! Plat du jour = prato do dia. Same concept, same words practically.

II. Reading the Menu

French menus follow a predictable structure. Once you know these sections, you can navigate any menu in France:

⚠️ Tricky word: In French, le menu usually means a set meal (prix fixe), not the full menu! The full menu is la carte. So "à la carte" literally means "from the menu." Confusing, but now you know!

⚠️ Tipping in France: Service is included in the price (service compris). You don't need to tip! If the service was exceptional, leaving a euro or two is a nice gesture, but it's never expected. Very different from the US!
🔑 Waiter signals: The French waiter will never bring the check unless you ask. It's considered rude to rush you. When you're ready, make eye contact and say L'addition, s'il vous plaît or simply raise your hand gently. They'll also never ask "Is everything okay?" five times — one check at the beginning and you're left in peace.
